Why Finland

Finland rewards travellers who want room to think. Short distances, quiet roads and nature that begins where the town ends.

  • Space to breathe

One of Europe's least crowded countries. Even in peak summer you can find a lake shore with nobody else on it.

  • Thousands of lakes

Finland's lake district is a landscape of water, islands and pine — best explored slowly, by car, boat or bike.

  • Safe and easy travel

Excellent roads, clean tap water, widely spoken English and simple, reliable logistics for independent travellers.

  • Authentic sauna culture

Sauna here is everyday life, not a spa product. A lakeside sauna followed by a swim is the local definition of luxury.

  • Long summer days

In June and July the light barely leaves. Evenings stretch on and on, which changes how a holiday feels.

  • Nature always nearby

National parks, marked trails and free-to-roam forests sit minutes from most towns, including the capital.

What if your August holiday felt spacious instead of crowded?

Summer in Finland is a different kind of holiday. Comfortable temperatures, room to move and days that stay bright long after dinner.

  • Comfortable summer weather. Typical July and August days are pleasantly warm rather than exhausting, which makes walking, cycling and exploring easy.
  • Room to explore. Trails, beaches and viewpoints that stay calm even in high season, and roads where driving is genuinely relaxing.
  • Peaceful lakes and beaches. Lake water warms up nicely by mid-summer, and many shores are shared with only a handful of people.
  • Long daylight hours. Bright evenings mean you can arrive late and still swim, cook outside or take a walk before the light fades.
  • Cottages surrounded by nature. A wooden cottage with its own sauna and shoreline is the classic Finnish summer — and it is easier to book than you think.
  • Relaxed family travel. Short driving distances, safe swimming spots and child-friendly practicalities take the friction out of travelling with children.

A wooden cottage with its own jetty and sauna, a rowing boat and a shoreline that belongs to you for the week. The heart of the Finnish summer.

  • Sauna and wellbeing

Traditional wood-heated saunas, public city saunas and smoke saunas — followed by a lake swim and a very good night's sleep.

  • National parks and hiking

Marked trails, duckboard paths and simple shelters, from gentle family loops to multi-day routes through forest, bog and ridge landscapes.

  • Food and local culture

Market halls, berry and mushroom season, lakeside fish, rye bread, small-town cafés and summer festivals in unlikely places.

  • Family experiences

Swimming beaches, easy trails, farm visits, science centres and rainy-day options that keep everyone in a good mood.

  • Road trips

Quiet roads, short distances between highlights, and the freedom to stop at a lake, a bakery or a viewpoint whenever you want.

  • Helsinki and coastal Finland

Design, sea fortresses, island ferries, wooden old towns and an archipelago that begins minutes from the city centre.

  • Arctic and winter experiences

Snow, husky and reindeer country, aurora nights and the polar day. Wonderful — and not the only reason to come to Finland.

Frequently asked questions

Is Finland a good destination in summer?
Yes. Summer is arguably the easiest time to travel in Finland: comfortable temperatures, very long daylight hours, warm-enough lakes for swimming and nature that is fully accessible. July and August are the classic cottage and road-trip months.
Do I need to speak Finnish?
No. English is widely spoken, road signs are clear and services are easy to use independently. Learning kiitos (thank you) is appreciated but not required.
Is Finland only about Lapland and winter?
Not at all. Lapland is wonderful, but the lake district, the archipelago, the national parks and the summer cottage culture are what many locals love most — and they are at their best from June to August.
How much does a trip to Finland cost?
It varies widely with season, accommodation style and how much you drive. Self-catering in a cottage and cooking some meals keeps costs moderate; hotels and restaurants in peak season cost more. Our article on Finland travel costs gives indicative ranges.
What exactly do I get for the planning fee?
A personalised itinerary with a recommended route, accommodation suggestions, activities and local experiences, driving and transport advice, and practical recommendations shaped by your interests and available time.
Do you book everything for me?
In this first version you remain in control of your reservations unless we agree otherwise. We give you the plan, the options and the practical guidance to book confidently.
