Winding lakeshore roads, saunas and quiet forests

Finnish Lakeland Road Trip

The Finnish Lakeland is best seen slowly, from behind the wheel, with the window down and a flask of coffee in the cupholder. This route strings together some of the country's most photogenic lake towns without ever feeling rushed, leaving room for detours, swims and second helpings of cinnamon buns.

This is an example itinerary created for inspiration, not a confirmed package tour. Every GoHappy Finland plan is adapted to your dates, pace and interests.

Route overview

The loop typically starts in Lahti or Kuopio and works its way through Savonlinna and the narrow, pine-covered esker at Punkaharju before looping back via the Saimaa lake system. Along the way there is plenty of scope to add a night in Mikkeli or a detour towards Koli if time allows.

Example itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arrival and first lake views

Pick up your rental car and head north out of the city, stopping as soon as the lakes appear. An early swim or a coffee on a jetty is a good way to set the pace for the days ahead.

  2. Days 2-3

    Savonlinna and Punkaharju

Explore Savonlinna's lakeside castle, Olavinlinna, before driving the scenic Punkaharju ridge, a narrow strip of land squeezed between two lakes. Stop at one of the small cafés along the ridge for coffee and a slice of local rye bread.

  3. Days 4-5

    Deeper into Saimaa

Spend a couple of days exploring the Saimaa lake district at a gentler pace, taking a boat trip or simply renting a rowing boat for an afternoon. This is also a good stretch to look out for the rare Saimaa ringed seal, best spotted with a local guide.

  4. Day 6

    Kuopio and a proper sauna

Continue north to Kuopio, home to one of Finland's largest smoke saunas. Combine a sauna session with a swim in the lake and a plate of local fish from the market square.

  5. Days 7-8

    Homeward via smaller roads

Take the smaller back roads on the way south, stopping wherever a lake or a farm shop looks appealing. Build in a spare day in case you want to linger somewhere longer than planned.

Practical considerations

  • Distances look short on the map but lake roads wind a lot, so allow more driving time than a straight line suggests.
  • Book lakeside cottages well ahead for July, which is the busiest month for Finnish domestic holidays.
  • Mosquitoes can be persistent near still water in midsummer; pack repellent.
  • Supermarkets in smaller towns often close earlier than in cities, so shop for the evening in good time.
  • Some minor roads have ferry crossings that run on a timetable, so check ahead rather than assume they run constantly.
