A rocky ridge trail overlooking forested hills and a lake in eastern Finland

Coastal cities, wild forests and quieter corners south

Finland Beyond Lapland

Lapland gets most of the attention, but southern and eastern Finland hold their own quieter rewards: handsome coastal cities, ancient forests and an archipelago that feels like its own small country. This route is for travellers ready to look past the postcard north.

This is an example itinerary created for inspiration, not a confirmed package tour. Every GoHappy Finland plan is adapted to your dates, pace and interests.

Route overview

The itinerary links Turku's archipelago and the Åland Islands in the west with Koli National Park and the Karelian region in the east, via Tampere and the lakeland. It works well as a longer loop for anyone with time to spare and a taste for variety.

Example itinerary

  1. Days 1-2

    Turku and the archipelago

Start in Turku, Finland's oldest city, exploring its castle and cathedral before taking a ferry out into the archipelago. Island-hopping here reveals a slower, salt-air version of Finland.

  2. Days 3-4

    Åland Islands

Cross to the semi-autonomous Åland Islands, known for cycling routes, red granite coastlines and a distinct local culture. Renting bicycles is a good way to cover the flatter main island.

  3. Day 5

    Tampere

Head back to the mainland and on to Tampere, a former industrial city now known for its museums, lakes on both sides and lively food scene.

  4. Days 6-7

    Koli National Park and Karelia

Continue east to Koli National Park, famous for its ridge views over Lake Pielinen, then spend time exploring Karelian culture and cuisine in the surrounding towns.

  5. Days 8-9

    Kuopio and the lakeland

Loop back through Kuopio for a final sauna and lake swim, using slower roads to enjoy the lakeland one more time before heading home.

Practical considerations

  • Book ferry crossings to Åland in advance during summer weekends, when demand is highest.
  • This is a genuinely long route, so consider dropping one region if you have under eight days.
  • Karelian towns can have more limited public transport, so a car is useful for this eastern leg.
  • Daylight in May and August is still generous, making early starts and late finishes easy to plan.
  • Check regional bus and ferry timetables the day before, as rural services can be infrequent outside peak summer.
