A passenger ferry crossing calm water between islands near Helsinki

City design, island ferries and forest close by

Helsinki, Archipelago and Nature

Helsinki has a rare knack for feeling both compact and close to nature, and this route takes advantage of that: a few days of design, food and harbour life, followed by island-hopping ferries and a day breathing pine forest air, all without needing a car.

This is an example itinerary created for inspiration, not a confirmed package tour. Every GoHappy Finland plan is adapted to your dates, pace and interests.

Route overview

Base yourself in Helsinki and use the excellent public transport, ferries and cycling routes to reach the outlying islands and Nuuksio National Park just outside the capital. A short train ride can also add Porvoo, a well-preserved wooden old town, as an easy day trip.

Example itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arrival and city orientation

Settle in and get a feel for Helsinki's neighbourhoods on foot, from the design district to the market square. An evening walk along the harbour is a relaxed way to arrive.

  2. Day 2

Design, food and the market halls

Spend the day exploring the city's museums, design shops and covered market halls, tasting local fish and pastries as you go. Helsinki rewards unhurried wandering more than a tight checklist.

  3. Day 3

    Suomenlinna sea fortress

Take the short ferry across to the Suomenlinna sea fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and spend a few hours walking the ramparts and picnicking by the water.

  4. Day 4

    Nuuksio National Park

Head out to Nuuksio for a day of hiking among lakes and rocky forest, one of the easiest ways to feel properly in the wild without leaving the Helsinki region. A packed lunch by a lake makes the day complete.

  5. Day 5

    Porvoo day trip

Take the bus or a boat to Porvoo, with its red wooden warehouses and cobbled old town, for a slower final day of wandering and coffee shop stops.

Practical considerations

  • The Helsinki card or a multi-day transport ticket usually pays for itself if you plan several museum visits.
  • Ferries to Suomenlinna run frequently but check the last return time so you are not stranded.
  • Nuuksio has marked trails of varying length, so pick one that matches your fitness and time before setting off.
  • Many museums close on Mondays, so check opening days when building your schedule.
  • Even in a city break, pack layers, since coastal weather can change quickly.
