Visit Finland in October: Autumn Colours, Quiet Lakes and Warm Saunas
Cool air, golden birches and a warm sauna after a day outdoors. Discover what an October trip to Finland can really look like.

You can visit Finland in October and have a wonderful time outdoors. You need warm layers, flexible plans and the right expectations: this is an autumn holiday, with changeable weather and shorter days.
In southern and central Finland, the beginning of October can still bring colourful trees, open water and good conditions for walking. We took our own boat trip with friends in October. The photographs in this article come from that outing and the autumn scenery around it.
If a quiet lake, a forest walk and a sauna sound like your kind of holiday, October deserves a closer look.
What is the weather like in Finland in October?
October is cool. On a milder day early in the month, parts of southern and central Finland can see daytime temperatures around 5–15°C. Treat that as a possible range, not a monthly average or a promise. Cold spells can bring much lower temperatures, and nights can fall to freezing or below.
You might get sunshine, low cloud, rain or a mixture of all three. Wind also matters: standing on a boat deck can feel considerably colder than walking through a sheltered forest.
Lapland is a different proposition. According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, thermal winter usually begins there around mid-October. Check the forecast for your actual destination rather than relying on one number for the whole country.
Autumn colours: choose the region and timing carefully
The Finnish word for autumn foliage is ruska. Birch trees turn yellow, other trees add warmer shades, and evergreen pines give the landscape contrast.
Visit Finland places the usual southern peak around late September and early October, with the northern peak earlier, in September. Weather changes the timing each year.
Our October photographs show yellow birches beside the water, reeds along the shore and leaves still on many trees. That is a real snapshot of one trip; later in the month, wind and rain may already have stripped much of the foliage.

Things to do in Finland in October
Hiking and gentle forest walks
A walk does not need to be a long expedition. Choose a short marked route, pause beside the water and take a thermos of coffee. For many visitors, those small moments are the most memorable part of Finland. Cool air can make walking pleasant if you dress properly. Allow time to return before dark and choose footwear with grip for wet roots and leaves.

Mountain biking
Mountain biking can also be an option when the local trails and rental services are suitable. Ask which routes permit cycling and how wet the ground is. Shorter routes, layers and warm gloves make more sense than an ambitious day planned without checking conditions.
Sauna and time by the lake
A sauna is a lovely way to end an autumn day. Spend time outdoors, warm up and enjoy the view. You do not need to swim to enjoy the experience; sitting beside a Finnish lake with a hot drink can be enough.
Coffee and food outdoors
A simple break can become the highlight: coffee from a flask, something to eat and no rush to move on. A campfire meal is another possibility where fires are permitted and current warnings allow them.
Our real October boat trip in Finland
We went with friends, and the landscape was unmistakably autumnal: yellow trees along the shoreline, dark water and a grey sky. A boat gives you a different view of the countryside, passing wooded shores and lakeside buildings at a slower pace.
The boat used for our experience has heating inside and a sauna. Those details matter in October, because you can spend time looking at the scenery and then go indoors to warm up.
Early October is generally the part of the month we would explore first for this kind of trip. Later dates depend on local conditions and availability. If temperatures move towards zero, the experience can become much less comfortable, especially with wind. Heating and a sauna do not make every day suitable for boating.
Ask us about your dates before building the whole holiday around it. We can check whether the boat experience is a good fit or suggest another way to enjoy the lakes.

Early October or late October?
Early October is the period to consider first if autumn leaves and a possible boat outing are your priorities in southern Finland. Colours still depend on that year's conditions.
Later October can still work for forest walks, sauna and a slower holiday, but plan for colder weather, less daylight and fewer leaves. Check activity availability before booking; an experience shown on a website may not operate throughout the month.
What to pack
Bring layers, a warm midlayer, a windproof and waterproof jacket, comfortable water-resistant walking shoes, warm socks, gloves and a hat. Add a small backpack and a thermos if you like walking. Pack for colder conditions than a mild daytime forecast suggests, especially for the boat.
Check the local forecast again shortly before travelling and adjust your plans.
Is October a good time to visit Finland?
Yes, if you enjoy autumn landscapes and can be flexible about the weather. It suits people who value forest walks, quiet moments by the water and the warmth of a sauna.
For a holiday built around warmth or dependable snow activities, choose another season. For a trip built around nature and small Finnish experiences, October can offer a great deal.
